🧡 Papaya Rule-ing, Haas Comeback & Other Chinese GP 2025 Takeaways
The Shanghai International Circuit returned with a bang, delivering drama, surprises, and serious early championship shake-ups. Here’s my breakdown of just a few of the talking points from the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix:
🍊 Papaya Rule-ing
Oscar Piastri made it look easy. His first-ever pole and a dominant drive to victory. Add Lando Norris in P2 despite his qualifying struggles this weekend, and suddenly McLaren’s “Papaya Rules” mantra isn’t just branding it’s prophecy. Their 50th one-two finish marks a major milestone and confirms they’re firmly at the top of the heap this season. Despite a few hiccups here and there, they've shown both in Melbourne and in China that they can weather the storm this season and leave everyone seeing papaya.
🔧 Haas Comeback
Haas fans, rejoice. After getting overshadowed by their suprising lack of pace in Melbourne, they nailed it in China. Esteban Ocon crossed the line in P7 which ultimately turned into P5 after Ferrari's double DSQ, while Oliver Bearman bagged P8 — a huge result for the team. Ollie deserved that comeback and showed his talent this weekend with some great on track action and either of these two drivers should have been driver of the day. Japan will be another good test for the team to confirm they are on the right track and with the pace they had on Sunday the fight for best of the rest may involve Haas and Alex Albon until Carlos Sainz gets his new chassis.
🗣️ Lawson Rumors
Liam Lawson’s run with Red Bull has been underwhelming to say the least, and now the rumor mill is churning. With Yuki Tsunoda waiting in the wings, some are whispering that Lawson could be swapped out as early as the Japanese GP. I said in the preseason I thought Yuki should’ve been in the car in the first place. The most damning evidence for Lawson was watching Alex Brundle analyze his qualifying lap on the F1 TV coverage and explain how he is driving extremely tentative. That just won't cut it in F1 and especially with the short leash Red Bull will have for him.
The team's focus on Max and having a car that suits him couldn't be more apparent in what we are seeing from Lawson. Perez must be laughing at home with his buyout check while he speaks to the Cadillac team in a text group. For years it's felt like the team has no concern for their second car or driver and the long-term effects this will have (when Max leaves) will be devastating.
Here's to seeing Yuki make his Red Bull debut in Japan at home and stick it in the top 5.
🏎️ Russell Rising: A New Contender?
George Russell may not have won in Shanghai, but P3 and not miles off the pace was a clear signal: he’s leading Mercedes now. His consistency, pace, and race maturity are top-tier. If Mercedes keeps delivering, George is laying the groundwork for a legit title run — if not this year, then soon. George definitely has his moments on the radio at times but I absolutely love what he has accomplished and can't help but cheer him on. Mercedes have already showed resiliency the last few years and George is ready to bring the title back to Silver Arrows.
That’s all from Shanghai! What did you think of the race — and do you believe Russell could be a future world champion or Yuki will replace Liam soon? Let me know in the comments 🐱🏁
